2010 Goals

January 7, 2010

So last year, I made a modest list of things, that were next to impossible not to reach (even though I did manage to miss one). This year, I’m aiming a bit higher, and I’m going to try and use this space to help me keep some of those goals. So, here are my goals:

Have a fun wedding.
March 13 is coming very quickly, and Alan and I are a bit bogged down with a lot of details that we’d pushed off until after Christmas. Turns out they can’t be put off any longer. I’m trying to get invitations done and sent out right now, as well as having my dress altered, finishing touches put on the ceremony, writing our vows, getting rings, and the list just keeps going. I’m not used to being the person responsible for an entire event, and at times it seems like it’s more expense and frustration than it’s really worth. I think it’s important for me to remember that we’re having this party to celebrate our relationship with our families and friends, and not to get bogged down in the details that nobody is super concerned about. I’m started to get excited about having it done and over with, so that Alan and I can move on to our next adventure, whatever that might be.

Reach some weight loss goals
This one honestly doesn’t have anything to do with the wedding. It’s been a struggle for me to lose and keep weight off for my entire teenage / adult life. I fully expect that it will continue to be a challenge forever. However, this year, I’m going to make it my goal to lose 35 pounds. I know this is an achievable goal if I can only stick with it. In this respect, I will post once a week a roundup of all the things I have done to maintain my fitness, as well as where I stand on weight loss (with a base line of last week). I know that there are no magic hammers I can use to solve this problem, and that instead it will be a gradual change of eating and exercise habits. I am confident that I can do this with the proper motivation and support.

Here’s how I’m going to reach my goals:

  1. I have joined Weight Watchers. I will be tracking points and following their eating programs.
  2. I no longer have two hours of commuting time to get to work every day. My new workplace isn’t near any fast food or corner stores. This is already making a difference.
  3. I will go to the gym three to four times per week. I will participate in the group exercise classes, as I know they will help keep me motivated for the time I am at the gym
  4. I will not get give up when I get discouraged. I will call upon my support structures to listen to me whine and then to get me focused once more on my goals.

Finish Glaxar’s blanket before March 13th
And by ‘finish’, what I mean is have all the quilt blocks made and pieced together, forming the top of the blanket. I will then have to seek outside assistance in actually building a blanket out of it. As of last night, I have twenty blocks finished, and I think I was aiming for about 28 blocks. There are a couple of blocks that are bad and will probably have to be redone, so I have about ten more blocks to make. Then I have to piece them all together and put borders on it. I’ve been managing about two to three blocks per week, so at that pace I should be in good shape to complete the quilt in time. Yay!

Read 50 books
I like reading. I have a lot of books I haven’t read yet. I got like, 12 books for Christmas. I should read a lot of books this year. Right now I’m tackling my first Margart Atwood book, and enjoying it thoroughly.

Smaller goals

  • Never go to bed with dirty dishes
  • Cook something new every week
  • Win New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Alan and I are playing our way through it and are very bad at co-operative play. It’s a different way of thinking, and we are still working out how it should happen.
  • Get my passport. Seriously, how do I not have it? Guess I’m just lazy
  • Take more pictures
  • Go on more adventures
  • Blog because I want to, not out of any feeling of obligation
  • Reinstate pizza and laundry night. I hate doing laundry on the weekend.

I think that’s the list. I know it’s a little rambling and about a week late, but I hope you enjoyed it.

  • How do you not have a passport! Get on that one!

I’ve heard great things about weight watchers, good luck!

Take more pictures, we should be friends on flickr if we’re not already! :)

The trainer I talked to at the gym today thinks 30lbs is a reasonably goal for me this year. We’ll see about that, considering that I love me some junk food.

    1. your wedding will be fantabulously fun, don’t sweat the small stuff. mom was running around like a chicken with her head cut off, if you can recall, and I later learned of a number of things that were missed or “wrong” that I, nor anyone else noticed. So long as you and Alan are happy, then what else really matters?!?!

    2. :) we can be weight loss buddies! I’m doing wii fit and Brad and I have been super good at cutting out processed foods..but then again I’m home to make dinner every day. I personally am against all weight loss programs, I think as long as you follow the food guide more or less, and avoid pre-packaged and processed foods, you’re really eliminating the majority of bad things that lead to weight gain and other nutrition issues. But alas, I ramble, and that is just my opinon, and I’ve never tried a diet plan anyways :P

    3. My dear alien baby will be fine if his quilt isn’t finished by the wedding. No need to add it to your list of stresses for the big day :)

    4. Mmmmm books. I’m currently on book 11 of the Wheel of Time series…then on to The Symbol by Dan Brown, and then the Dark Tower series by King…I went and bought the last three books with a gift card I got for xmas :) And then after that I think I’ll re-read the Otherland series by Tad Williams. Don’t think I got through it the first go around.

    5. I’ve been considering starting a cooking-esqu blog..not like that julie/julia movie, but I’ve been trying a lot of new things and they are uber tasty and I think people should know about it :P How do I start a blog? (Or can I just keep replying to yours all super long like and pretend its mine?)

    6. I totally know what you mean about Mario Bros Wii…it frustrates me to know end playing it with Brad…he keeps pushing me off stuff and into stuff. Our first go at it, we had like 14 continues between the two of us and only made it to 2-1.

    7. I don’t have a valid passport either…I have one thats still in date, but it still has my maiden name on it :S

    8. I like adventures…northern adventures are cold though :(

Ok I think I’m done now :) I heart you Shannon!!!

This is such an inspiring post Shan… good stuff! I think the goals you’ve set are completely reasonable.

First of all, the wedding is going to be a BLAST! I can’t wait! I’m totally psyched. On that note, if there’s any chores you don’t need to handle, you do have bride’s maids… don’t forget that eh! We’re here to be used and abused!

Secondly, your weight loss goal is beyond reasonable. When I joined weight watches, all I had any intention to lose was 30lbs. That’s all I wanted… just gimme 30lbs to get me back to something I feel comfortable with. Then it just took off after that. But I can’t emphasize enough that the only thing on my mind for the weight loss was that 30lbs, and I didn’t even START to think past that until I was there. Then I thought 20 more… and so on it went. But I woulda been happy just losing the 30… that was my only goal at the time.

THe books and new recipes are awesome ideas!

Just don’t forget to include goals that you KNOW you’ll achieve, or things that are just fun (like, I’m gonna have sex with Alan EVERY DAY!) On my list of things to do in 2010, I have everything from getting a driver’s license, to “I will turn 26″, to “I will pray at least once a week.” Don’t forget to add things that you KNOW you will do… I just find it helps.

All the best my dear =) And if you ever need to whine about ANYTHING, you know my number.

Look at all of the commenters! How exciting!

If there’s anything that you and Alan can’t handle for the wedding Kat, Lem and I are here to help! And yes, I totally just volunteered them, except Kat seems to have the same idea as me in that respect.

Good luck with the weight loss goals – I would like some pointers in that respect, if you can give advice to someone who refuses to go to the gym. ;)

And yay for books and new food and adventures!! :)

Oh yes, totally if there is anything you need me to do, just say it…like “special” northern ontario snow…or gold…yes I’ll go into the mines and gather you gold :P or to cochran and get you a polar bear to ride into the wedding on :P lol ok that one kinda makes me wish i wasn’t already married so I could do that…

    !!!!

Shannon and Alan should TOTALLY have a polar bear at their wedding, to be of use to them like the horse was in Napoleon’s brother’s wedding in Napoleon Dynamite!!
