For a bad day, just add alcohol

Last night, I was suffering from what I would consider a terrible day. So I concocted something that certainly raised my spirits. My typical fruit smoothie with a bit of a twist. I have no idea if the quantities are accurate, but it will give you a good idea of how to make it. Round two was a little stronger than round one. By the time I got to round 3, it was just whiskey.

Cherry Whiskey Smoothies

Ingredients:

  • 1 banana
  • ~1 c. frozen mango
  • ~1 c. frozen strawberries
  • ~1/2 c. frozen raspberries
  • 3-4 shots cherry whiskey
  • 3/4 c. vanilla yogurt

Directions:

  1. Put everything in a blender and hit the button
  2. Enjoy!

Serves 2 depending on how much you want. In my typical smoothies, there’s a little more yogurt and a lot less whiskey. A fairly healthy alternative to cheesecake.

pond dalekDr Who Dalek found in pond

I think this may be the best thing ever. Or maybe it’s the beginning of the end. Either way, how freaked out would I be if a Dalek head suddenly emerged out of the water in front of me?

This weekend, I made up a vat of chicken chili. Alan got this recipe from his boss, and though I loved it the way it was, Alan thought it was a little hot. So after trying it a couple of times, I’ve made a few modifications and Alan and I both seem to agree that it’s better in its new form. It makes about… seven or eight fairly big servings. I have no idea how healthy this stuff is. My guess is not very.

Buttered Chicken Chili

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs ground chicken
  • 1 can chick peas
  • 1 red onion
  • 2 cans of chopped mushrooms
  • 3 carrots chopped
  • 1 red pepper
  • 1 green pepper
  • 3 stems of broccoli
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 bottle PC Kashmir tandoori sauce
  • 1 jar Classico 4 cheese alfredo sauce
  • 1 jar Classico roasted garlic alfredo sauce

Directions:

  1. Sautee ground chicken until cooked through.
  2. Chop and dice veggies as required
  3. Combine all ingredients and cook in slow cooker for about 7-8 hours

Hope you enjoy!

Coraline - Neil Gaiman

Coraline - Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman
2002

After a few consecutive books with a weak, annoying female character, I was in need of some strong female ass kicking. And since Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles has forgotten that is what it’s good at, television hasn’t been very useful as of late. Coraline was just what the doctor ordered. If you’ve seen the film that was recently released, you know the story: Coraline and her parents move to a new house, and while exploring the house, Coraline finds a door which leads to a parallel world. Though at first, everything seems better (with the exception of the creepy button eyes), she starts seeing how wrong this world really is. The other mother steals her parents away, and Coraline has to rescue them, along with the souls of the other children she has stolen, and get the key back to the door in order to save her family.

I must say that I really enjoyed this book. It doesn’t fit into the realm of sci-fi, which is what I’ve been reading mostly lately. It was a kid’s book, and it played on a kid’s biggest asset and their biggest flaw, their imagination. Descriptions are short and leave a child’s mind free to fill in the blanks with whatever horrors they can dream up. I’m not a child, and I found the book extremely creepy. It was a quick, enjoyable read, and I didn’t want to put it down until it was done, which is a great thing. I look forward to digging deeper into Neil Gaiman’s catalog the next time I get the chance.

TARDIS This weekend, I showed my todo list who’s boss for once. I was able to cross off every item on my list, and in addition, had a great weekend. Pizza and Laundry night has turned into a bit of a weekly tradition, mostly because laundry needs to be done and we like pizza. It’s a nice way to end the week.

I went to the gym, grocery store, and book store on Saturday, as well as getting my eyebrows waxed. I bought two Neil Gaiman books, The Gum Thief by Douglas Coupland, and a Discover magazine. In addition, I made a chicken chili that Alan and I like (I may post the recipe later), read a chapter of my PHP book, sorted through a lot of music, and watched a lot of last week’s TV.

On Sunday, I finished reading Coraline (review is coming, I promise), went to the mall to get my ring cleaned, and started a new book.

This coming weekend, I am going home for a meeting on Sunday. On Saturday, one or two of my bridesmaids (and my Mom if she’s available) are going to meet up in London and go dress shopping. I’m looking forward to being able to go to the new church for the first time, and having some time to sort out wedding plans.

Also, as this doesn’t really warrant a post of its own, io9 agrees with me: Kyle XY doesn’t suck (and may be better than Heroes. Also, a new TARDIS? Unless they make it totally badass, I may be tuning out.
