Isaac Asimov - Foundation

Isaac Asimov
1951

This book is a collection of five short stories all related to each other, telling the early history of the planet Terminus. The old Galactic Empire, centered around the planet of Trantor. A group of psychohistorians, led by Hari Seldon, have figured out the future course of history, and determined that they can mitigate the dark ages that will ensure after the fall of Trantor from twenty thousand years to a single millenia. A group of people have been sent to Terminus to preserve science and culture for the generations to come.

Foundation’s short stories all revolve around moments in this predicted course of history where the inhabitants of Terminus must radically change their ways in order to maintain and improve their own position in the galaxy, and become the driving force of the future. There are no bloody space wars, just gentle tactics, and the stories are brilliant and riveting.

I love Asimov’s short stories. One of my favourite things is the way he describes environments and paints scenes. I wouldn’t consider characterizations one of his strong suits, but he tells a good story and can paint large swaths of space and time by narrating short periods really well. This is the first book in what was originally a trilogy and is now an epic series which encompasses many of his other novels. I am very much looking forward to reading the next book in the original trilogy.

New Year’s Eve.
I was blessed with the ability to work from home on New Year’s Eve, which allowed me the opportunity to plan and execute a lovely celebration of the completion of another revolution around the sun.
On Tuesday night, I stopped at IKEA and picked up some wine glasses, candlesticks and candles, and two bottles of cheap wine at the LCBO. I went grocery shopping the next day and picked up a shrimp ring and flowers among other things, and spent the afternoon furiously cleaning the apartment. When Alan arrived home from work, we snacked on shrimp and some Pilsbury rolls and cooked up a very nice Beef with Broccoli and some mixed veggies. It was a really nice, quiet evening, which we don’t get very many of. We were both in bed asleep before midnight. Alan and I celebrated our five year anniversary on New Year’s Day by relaxing, napping and playing video games. New Year’s Day is kind of an annoying day to have an anniversary because so few places are open.

Hanging out with Brad and Lem.
Last night our friends Brad and Lem came over for dinner. We drank Brad and Lem’s wedding wine, had lasagna, caesar salad and rolls, and Lem brought a delicious cake. We played Wii games and watched Will It Blend? On YouTube, then went on a fruitless hunt for Wii games to rent. After we returned to the apartment, we played Killer Bunnies and The Quest For The Magic Carrot, and Trivial Pursuit. It was a fun night.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
A couple of months ago, either Courtney or Kat recommended I watch Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and it’s only been recently that I’ve been able to sit down a watch it. I was a little skeptical, and the show definitely has its flaws, but for the most part it’s quite good, especially the effects. I think Lena Headey, who plays Sarah Connor is a little stiff and robotic, especially in the first season, but the rest of the actors do a good job, and Summer Glau, who plays Cameron is excellent. I could do without the Heroes-style voiceovers at the beginning and end of the episodes, but that’s just a little quibble.

Invoice Entry Interface.
At work right now, I’m working on a fairly large chunk of a rewriting of our Business Intelligence tool. This is the set of screens where our employees enter invoices into the system. It’s very important that this part of the application works well, and I’m finding it more involved and challenging than a lot of the things I’ve been asked to do in the last month or so. My goal is to have all of the UI, including AJAX, Javascript and form validation written and debugged by the end of the week.

Getting Back to Real Life.
Christmas was fun, but it’s really nice to get back to your own apartment, sleep in your own bed, under your own sheets, and wake up to your own alarm clock. We were gone from the 24th to the 28th, and it was a busy time, with lots of people around, which isn’t something Alan and I are used to any more. Our apartment seemed like a quiet refuge after that busy time.

Honorable Mentions:
Making it to the gym every day I went to work. Christmas at Uncle Gary’s. Remembering the answers Alan’s passport hints. Doctor Who: The Next Doctor [the Christmas Episode, not Matt Smith]. Finishing Foundation. Will It Blend?

Well, Courtney and a few others I know have done this requisite beginning of the year blog post, and I love a good bandwagon, so here I go. Just so you all know, I’m stealing many of these from other people, as original thought and blogging don’t seem to go hand-in-hand for me.

2009 Goals / Resolutions

Sort and tag my music collection. This acutally started about two weeks ago now. I have around 5,000 songs on my computer that comprises my music collection, which isn’t really a lot. Unfortunately, the files have become woefully neglected. My preference for file names is the format %artist% – %album% – %track number% – %song name% and I want that data to be in the ID3 tag accurately as well. Most of my files have the artist name and song name accurately, but most do not have the remaining data. The task at hand can be broken down into these subtasks:

  • Get rid of songs I no longer like. It’s normal that tastes change over time, and mine certainly have.
  • Ensure file names are as complete as possible. Wikipedia is really good at telling me what albums my songs come from.
  • Ensure ID3 tags have the correct artist, album, track number and song name. Extra data [genre, year, etc] is good as well, but not required.
  • Maintain a good directory structure.

Because I’m a Linux nerd, I use rhythmbox for my media player. For this project, however, I have been using mplayer from the command line, because I love the command line. Maybe I’ll write a super boring post about my sorting procedures. Maybe I’ll draw a flowchart for it. I like flowcharts.

Blog more. Because I’m pretty sure you all need to know about the minutiae of my life, like my music sorting procedures or how I make a super awesome lasagna or what I think about The Doctor this week [still love him]. I have a wedding to plan. I’m sure you’re interested in that, right? No? Too bad. But seriously, I don’t do a lot of writing that isn’t comma-delimited in my day to day life, and it’s an important skill to craft. A couple of weeks ago I sat down to write a couple of paragraphs about an event I had attended, and it was like pulling teeth. Seems like writing is one of those ‘use it or lose it’ sort of entities.

Finish that damn quilt. In the summer of 2007, I started a quilt. An easy beginner quilt. By September, I had the four big pieces that made up most of the quilt completed. By November, I had those pieces sewn together. I haven’t touched it since. All I have left to do on it is make a border of some sort and a back. My mom, the quilter in my life, says it should take three or four hours to add the border, tops. Maybe I should just sit down and finish it, then it would be done and I could move on with other projects.

Get Zend Certified. It’s probably important to stay up to date with what’s happening in my field. With that in mind, I am going to get my Zend PHP 5 Certification, and then maybe after that my Zend Framework Certification. I’m not sure about the ZF Certification, though, as I use Symfony on a daily basis and am not sure how good it would be to have those two things in my head at the same time. Also in this goal are sub-goals of improve my server administration and database administration skills.

Plan a Wedding. Mine, to be exact. We have a date set, and that’s about it really. I’m sure there are other details that are probably important. I should really look into that. Sub-goals: get in shape

Write A WordPress Theme / Customize My WordPress. This design is ugly and I want to make something prettier. With a better sidebar. And better photo integration. I love io9′s website (and content) and want to steal at least some of the elements from their page layout.

So that’s it. We’re going to call these goals, not resolutions, but they are what they are. I’m not sure the overflow of months into the years columns really requires such traditions as these, but taking the time to reflect and consider is always good.
