What Shannon learned from Torchwood this week

February 21, 2008

It’s a really bad idea to bring people back from the dead. Unless you’re captain Jack.
Gloves tend to come in pairs, and the second one is always evil. Eviler.
Dark atmospheric skeleton clouds make for really bad special effects.
Weevils creep me out.
Gwen rocks, even when she doesn’t do anything at all in an episode.

Martha Jones still kicks ass.

February sucks

It’s the middle of February and I officially miss the sun. It makes me grumpy not to be able to go out in the sunshine, at least once in a while.

But things are looking up: soon it will be spring, and I get to watch Torchwood when I get home

American Gladiators

February 19, 2008

It’s no secret that they’ve brought back American Gladiators. In fact, the series finale has already happened for this year. I still want to talk about it though.

I loved the original show. So campy, so great, so much fun. The new version of the show, I’m not so sure about. I don’t like the reality TV ’suspense music’, the pretending to start an event and then cutting to commercials instead. It’s gimmicky. The thing about the original was that the eliminator was a gimmick enough. No need for a those other things. Just people stand on a pedestal with a giant Q-Tip, pummeling each other. Good times.

Other comments: The female gladiators are really popping out of their uniforms. That can’t be comfortable. I don’t enjoy that the larger female gladiator is called Helga. I don’t know why they needed to put every event over a water pit. The guy who won I’m pretty sure is on the crack or a lot of anti-depressants. I miss the event where they have the giant hamster balls.

The show is much better if watched via your computer, where you can skip all the interviews. Takes 20 minutes to watch a 60 minute show.

Isaac Asimov – The Gods Themselves

Isaac Asimov - The Gods Themselves

Isaac Asimov - The Gods Themselves

I just finished yet another book in my Isaac Asimov collection. Though the story was good and quite compelling, I almost found the Wikipedia article about the book more interesting. It goes into why Asimov wrote the book and some of the details of the science behind the book in better detail. The plot itself is rather simple. As the article states:

The main plotline is a conspiracy by the aliens who inhabit a parallel universe with different physical laws than ours, with the final aim of turning our Sun into a supernova, and collecting the resulting energy for their use.

Which was great. The thing about the book that wasn’t as great was the romantic subplots in part 2 and 3. Parallel universes are great. Odd gelatin-like creatures are great. Love stories on the moon, not so great.

“Against stupidity the gods themselves contend in vain” – Friedrich Schiller

In general, I would recommend this book to the other sci-fi nerds in my life, but definately not as their first Asimov.

Elvis Costello

February 16, 2008

In recent months, perhaps even years, I have found the lack of interesting music frustrating. Other than a few standouts in my music collection who continue to produce meaningful music, nothing seems to stand out. I feel like such a loser adult saying such things, but it does appear that music may have indeed reached perfection somewhere in the middle of my high school career. Before rap rock and screamo and after the Juliana Theory.

But I digress. About a month ago, I got a large collection of Elvis Costello recordings. I didn’t realize just how much the guys rock. You should all do yourselves a favour and check out some of his non-greatest hits stuff. It’s very very good.

Going home for a wedding tomorrow. Hope the roads will be good, and the party fun.
